Djinn from the Cyber World?

How many of us have at some point of time in life, stayed online for so long, that when we looked at the time, we exclaimed, “What? It’s been three hours? What the hell have I been doing?”

Well, this is based on a true story shared by my cousin, who happened to tag along in an exorcism of a lady who was possessed by a djinn. I could not believe it at first, but after hearing out the whole story, and knowing my cousin as a trustworthy person, I realized that Allah s.w.t.’s greatness is too huge for my comprehension - there are just so many things we hear that we reject just because we cannot fathom how it is possible… and this story might just be one of those things.

Allah knows best.

We were seated in a room; the possessed lady, her husband and child, as well as myself, my friend (an ustaz) and his wife (an ustazah). To make things easier, let’s name the possessed lady Fatimah, the ustaz Ali and his wife Mariah.

As all of us settled in our positions, Fatimah’s husband relayed his wife’s story to us. As their child looked on, he shared about how for the past few weeks, his wife had been acting really weirdly; making lots of erratic hand gestures, scribbling hundreds upon hundreds of names of people they didn’t know and sometimes speaking in a voice that he knew wasn’t hers.

Fearing this his wife had had a mental breakdown of some sort, he brought her to the doctor. She took one look at the doctor in front of them and said, “You are Doctor Tan. Your wife is Deborah. You have two children.”. She then continued on rambling all the doctor’s personal information, taking him off guard as they had never met once before this and yet all that she said was nothing but the truth!

When asked as to where she got all the information, she just shrugged and replied, “Facebook.” Needless to say, the doctor couldn’t quite figure out what was wrong with her and therefore, couldn’t give her the prescription which was so badly needed.

Fatimah’s husband then wrapped up his introduction by saying that since the doctor could not figure out, he suspected that it could be something from the ‘other’ world as it was obvious that there was something amiss with his wife.

I turned and laid my gaze on Fatimah. Pieces of scrap paper were strewn all around her, full of almost illegible handwriting. As Ustaz Ali spoke up, I turned my head and almost fell back as I saw from the corner of my eyes something that I knew I wasn’t supposed to see.

Perched on Fatimah’s shoulder, was a black skinned Gollum-like creature, thin and with wrinkled skin, it’s arms stretching to embrace the whole of Fatimah’s head, shielding it from view. I turned my head again to get a clearer view, but just as it had came, the apparition disappeared into thin air yet again.

As I caught my breath, a shiver up my spine, Ustaz Ali had begun reciting some prayers from the Holy Qur’an. All of a sudden, Fatimah’s body slumped to the floor and the Ustaz’s wife, Mariah, suddenly started to make some hand gestures.

Hey! Mom always does that!

I glanced at Fatimah’s child, clutching on to his father, and looked back at Ustazah Mariah who was not acting like herself. It was like she was holding on to an imaginary pen, writing down things on slates of air, frantic.

In the name of Allah, what are you?”, begun Ustaz Ali, his voice forceful and determined. Ustazah Mariah looked up at him, and said in a raspy voice, fast and slithering, “Djinn.

Where are you from? And how did you get into Fatimah?”

Ustazah Mariah began drawing again as the djinn spoke through her, “I live in the cyber world, and my origins are from Israel. I got into Fatimah as I want to be with her husband. It was too easy to use her… she is always on Facebook, her mind always empty and she was already doing shirk by believing all the tarot and horoscope things she read on facebook. Too easy… I just want to be with her husband. I don’t mind being her husband’s second wife.

Ustaz Ali then started his normal question and answer routine. He first asked the djinn to leave the human world and go back to where it came from, but the djinn refused, saying it was scared to go back, fearing the repercussions. Afterwhich, Ustaz Ali read a series of verses from the Qur’an, and finally after some time, Ustazah Mariah too slumped onto the floor, and the room became silent.

After the whole session was done, and we left Fatimah’s home, Ustaz Ali turned to me and said,

“This is the problem with us nowadays. We spend too much time on the internet doing a lot of nonsense, and in the process, we empty our minds and hearts from the remembrance of Allah s.w.t. When your mind and heart is empty, it is so much easier for the djinn and syaitaan to take control.

Extreme cases are like the ones which turn out like what we just saw, but how about the mild ones that plague our ummah everywhere? We think that the hours we spend online, forgoing prayers, forgoing zikir, forgoing selawat, are because of the many ‘distractions’, but we forget that these distractions come from these djinns and syaitaan who live and reside anywhere. How many djinns are sitting on us, embracing our heads, blocking us from remembering Him?

Don’t get me wrong, it is ok to use the internet… but use it within boundaries. While doing your work or surfing the net, turn on the Qur’an, selawat or qasidah recital so that subconsciously you are always connected to Him. Never ever keep the mind empty or full of useless information, and be careful of committing shirk, even in the smallest of things. Install applications to always remind you when the prayer time has arrived.

Djinns and syaitaan are everywhere, even in the cyber world. They are constantly attacking us, preventing us from worship, that is their job. We must always remember this fact.”
